How Strength Training Saved Me

This might sound broad, it might even sound a little extreme. But I genuinely mean it with my whole heart! Strength training saved me, along with weightlifting.

My life going in a direction I didn’t like very fast. I was only 23 and was told by my doctor that I was overweight, I remember storming out of the doctor’s office furiously. I didn’t think the doctor knew what he was talking about. Being overweight to me was the people I had seen on the TLC show, “My 600 Pound Life”. It wasn’t someone like me, who was roughly 35-40lbs overweight. Looking back on it now, of course, my doctor was right. He was looking long-term and wanted me to get out in front of it. There was no reason why someone at the age I was with no prior health concerns or injury should be heading down this path.

It took me a few more months after that appointment so finally realize that I needed to make some lifestyle changes.

Getting winded going up a flight of stairs, my clothes didn’t fit me and was so uncomfortable in my body. I didn’t want to go out anymore. That is no way to live your life.

Fast forward to the hard! I finally decided to commit to the change. I dedicated the next year of my life to feeling good about myself again, learning about my body! Learning how to work out, and learning how to eat to reach my goals. I was too scared and embarrassed to go to the gym, so I went out to buy some at-home fitness programs. I crossed every day off my calendar for the next year and by the end of 365 days, I had successfully lost my 35lbs.

Strength training saved me, it saved me from a potentially large downward spiral.

Grateful for the community I have, that it lead me actually want to be a trainer, share my story, and help others along the way. Wanting to help others with my own experience really fuels me to be a better coach and trainer every day. It has given me my life back and even more than I could have ever asked for. I am forever grateful and proud of the influence I have on others, the clients and athletes that have trusted me that continue to trust me. It is not a job that I take lightly, it is something that I take very seriously. I enjoy supporting my people just as much as they support me.
